Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
High blood pressure is the most common primary diagnosis in America. The systolic BP continues to rise in our lives as we age, where as the diastolic BP rises until the age of 50 and tends to remain stable. HTN is treated with diet, exercise and medication. HTN retinopathy: narrowing of the retinal arterioles, in some cases the vessels can become damaged to lead to narrowing or a blockage.
In our clinic, we take blood pressure with every patient. Did you know:
• 50% of people 60-69 years old are effected
• 75% of those 70 years old and above are effected
• PRE-HTN: according to the JNC 7 report: 120-139mmHg systolic & 80-89 mmHg diastolic
• HTN: is defined as 140/90 mmHg or higher.
Hypertension can lead to increased risks:
• Heart attacks
• Heart failure
• Strokes
• Kidney failure
Hypertension increases with:
• Age
• Obesity
• Diabetes
• Smoking
• Excessive sodium intake
