Glaucoma
Glaucoma is defined as an ocular disease that can result in an increase in the intraocular pressure of the eyes, that can lead to damage of the optic nerve, with no symptoms in the early stages. Intraocular pressure is maintained by a balance of aqueous of inflow and outflow. Normal IOP is between 10-20mmHg and can fluctuate throughout the day. If untreated, glaucoma can cause a decrease in the peripheral vision and can eventually lead to blindness. Glaucoma can be treated with prescription eye drops or surgical options that help slow down the disease. An optometrist can monitor the condition through pressure checks, visual fields and OCT.
